My Cousin Rachel by Daphne Du Maurier

Hugely gripping and suspenseful!

I enjoyed this as much as Jamaica Inn.

Set both in Du Maurier’s idyllic Cornwall and also romantic and exotic Italy, I love how much of this story remains ambiguous. You think you have the answer by the end but like the main character Philip, you have a lot of self doubt…can you really be sure? There is so much twisted and cunning manipulation going on and Rachel is a character who could convince you black is white or white is black, whatever suited her whim at the time.

I’m not sure which Du Maurier to read next…

The Green Mile by Stephen King

Even though I’ve seen the film of this several times, I still enjoyed this book immensely. Knowing the story did not detract from it in any way, it is so fantastically written.

It was also fun to get to know the many memorable characters, especially John Coffey, in a different medium. (and of course Mr Jingles!)

This story pulls your heart strings in so many directions, they end up tied in knots. An excellent and heartfelt book, it is absolutely magical in spite of its severe setting.

The Vanished Bride by Bella Ellis

This book was an absolute and complete joy to read! Thank you Bella Ellis for writing this!!

The story is set in Yorkshire, 1845. The main characters are the three adventurous, determined and talented BrontΓ« sisters: Charlotte, Emily and Anne…..and they apply themselves assiduously to solving a murder!

This is such for fans of literature and murder mysteries!! I was so excited by this idea just reading the blurb on the back, I couldn’t wait to get home to start reading.

I simultaneously could not wait to read more and yet could not bear for this story to end – the ultimate nightmarish conundrum for every devoted bookworm!

This book even inspired another visit to the fantastic BrontΓ« Parsonage Museum in Haworth.

Happy happy reading! πŸ“˜πŸ›πŸ˜

Blue Bookworm’s top tips: write a diary!

Keeping a diary in the language you are learning is a constructive way to improve your language skills and allows you to look back and see the progress you are making.

It does not have to be a profound piece of work, simply writing about what you did during your day and what the weather was like, means you have to focus on correct tense and sentence structure.
